PRE-PURCHASE QUESTIONS FOR THE EDITABLE ADOBE PDF TEMPLATES

FOR EDITABLE ADOBE PDF templates, you’ll need to use Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows or Mac.  The templates will not work on other readers, mobile devices, tablets and Chromebooks. This is also mentioned in the product description. Subscription to Adobe is not required.

Here’s how it works…

Step 1  : First, make sure you have Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows or Mac, and that you are using a Windows or Mac computer.

Remember that the template will not work using other PDF readers, and this includes Mac Preview. You can download Adobe Acrobat Reader at http://get.adobe.com/reader.  It is free to use and subscription is not required.  Downloading the latest version would be best.

Step 2 :  Launch Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Step 3 :  From Adobe Acrobat Reader, click on File > OPEN > then select your template PDF file.

Step 4 : When your template is opened, enter your information.

You’ll see highlighted areas where you can enter your text.

If your template has entries for photos, just click on the photo icon and a window will pop up for you to select a photo from your computer’s photo library.  You may need to edit or crop your photo first using your favorite photo editor, before loading it on to your template since Adobe Reader isn’t capable of photo editing.  I recommend using pixlr.com/x, an online photo editor which makes editing and cropping photos into a square so easy.

Step 5 : Don’t forget to save!

Step 6 : PRINT. Print using your home printer or take your PDF file to OfficeMax, Fedex, or your preferred print shop.  Make sure your print shop uses Adobe Acrobat Reader to open your finished file.

For some templates, like invitations, you’ll need to trim off the crop marks.  Or, you can have your print shop trim them for you.

Yes, and that is exactly my goal!  For this to happen, make sure that you are using ONLY ADOBE READER for WINDOWS PC or MAC as mentioned in your product description.  The template will not work on the Adobe Reader app for mobile devices, tablets, and other computer systems.

I’m sorry, but the template will not work on a Chromebook.  The template will only work in Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows or Mac.

Unfortunately, the templates in PDF will only work correctly using Adobe Reader for Windows PC or Mac, and not on mobile devices.  The Adobe Reader app for mobile devices/tablets doesn’t have all the features and will only cause the PDF file to be unusable.

No, the template will only work correctly in Adobe Reader for Windows PC or Mac. Opening it in other programs will only cause the template to be unusable.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is free to use and you can download it at https://get.adobe.com/reader. Subscription to Adobe is not required.

Edit or crop your photos first using your favorite photo editor program before loading them to your template. You can also edit your photos using the website PIXLR, a free and easy to use online photo editor.

I wrote a tutorial on how to edit your photos using PIXLR. Click here to read it.

Remember that Adobe Acrobat Reader isn’t capable of photo editing.

I’m sorry, but I am not currently able to accept orders to customize or personalize the templates.

No, the graphic design and layout of the template are fixed and can’t be modified. This includes the colors of the graphical elements used in the template, margins and dimension of the template.

Please check out the Related Products section at the bottom of each product description in the shop to see if there are other layouts available for the template you’re interested in.

Yes, you can. But first, you’ll need to make your newsletter read-only, so it can no longer be edited by your recipients.  I have instructions to make your newsletter read-only and this will depend on the kind of computer you are using (Windows PC or Mac).  Once the newsletter is converted into a non-editable pdf, it can then be emailed and viewed not only on Windows PC and Mac computers, but also on any kind of PDF reader on any kind of device .

DOWNLOADING, UNZIPPING AND OPENING THE TEMPLATE

Please check your spam mailbox, in case Etsy’s email went there directly.

If you have an Etsy account, you can also download your file by logging in at Etsy, then click on YOU, then click on PURCHASES and REVIEWS. From your Etsy download page, you can download your file anytime and as many times you want.  I also have instructions for you there on how to correctly download and open your file.

If you don’t have an Etsy account and you made the purchase as a GUEST, contact me immediately if you still can’t find Etsy’s email, and I will email your file directly to you.

After completing your purchase, Etsy will immediately email you with a link to where you can download your file.  If you have an Etsy account, you can also download your file by logging in at Etsy, then click on YOU, then click on PURCHASES and REVIEWS. From your Etsy download page, you can download your file anytime and as many times you want.

It is important to read and follow the simple instructions I have for you in your download page to make sure that your file will always be in perfect working order.

Most computers these days will immediately UNZIP the file and show you the contents immediately.  If this is not happening to you, don’t worry , it’s easy to UNZIP.   Just follow the instructions below for Windows PC or Mac.

To UNZIP:

FOR WINDOWS PC: After you have downloaded your ZIP file, DOUBLE-CLICK on the ZIP file and a window will pop up showing you its contents (your template in PDF, readmefirst.pdf, and/or other files that I may have included in the zip file). Then, copy these files to another location in your computer. The files you copied to the new location are the ones that you will be using. Then, launch your Adobe Reader and open your (template) PDF file from inside Adobe Reader. That’s it!

FOR MAC: When you download the ZIP file from Safari,  Mac usually unzips it automatically for you so you’ll immediately see all of its contents in your Downloads folder. If this didn’t happen, just DOUBLE-CLICK the ZIP file (it should have a zipper icon) to UNZIP it and you’ll see its contents (your template in PDF, readmefirst.pdf, and/or other files that I may have included in the zip file).  Launch your Adobe Reader and then open your (template) PDF file from inside Adobe Reader.  That’s it!

Still not sure how to do this? Not a problem, just let me know by leaving me a message on Etsy and I’ll send your PDF file (not in a zip file) directly to your email address.

This happens when you are trying to open the .ZIP file (it has a zipper icon) in Adobe Reader instead of the PDF file. The ZIP file is not a supported file in Adobe Acrobat Reader and this is not your template yet. Your template is a .PDF file.

When you purchase a template from the shop, your digital download is a ZIP file (ex. templatename.ZIP). You can tell it’s a ZIP file because its icon has a zipper (see image below). A ZIP file is sort of like a bag where I placed all your files (your template in pdf,  the readmefirst.pdf file, and/or other files that may have been included) and you’ll need to UNZIP it to get to all of its contents.

Let’s UNZIP your digital download first so you can start using your template in PDF.

Not a problem, just let me know by leaving me a message on Etsy and I’ll email your template file directly to your email address.

This means that the PDF had been opened in Mac’s Preview, a browser, or a reader that’s not Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows or Mac.  This can disable some, if not all, of the template’s features.

This is easily solved using the steps below:

1. Download the file again from Etsy so you can have a perfectly working template. This is an important step, so please don’t skip this part.

2.  Launch Adobe Acrobat Reader using a Windows or Mac computer. It should say Adobe Acrobat Reader on the upper left area of the window.

3. Click on FILE>OPEN, then select your PDF template.

That’s it! Just make sure to always open your ADOBE PDF template in Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows or Mac computer.

You can download the free Acrobat Reader at https://get.adobe.com/reader. Subscription to Adobe is not needed.

Contact me, if you’re still having issues,  I’ll help make it work on your computer.

The PDF may have been opened in another reader or browser that altered the PDF.  If this happens, I recommend downloading your file again from Etsy so you know you have a perfectly working PDF template.  Then launch the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on your Windows or Mac computer and click on FILE>OPEN and select your newly downloaded PDF file.  Then, copy and paste what you had already typed from the other PDF to the newly downloaded PDF.  You can contact me for help too.

TEXT AND FONTS

This means that the PDF had been previously opened in Mac’s Preview, a browser, or a reader that’s not Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows or Mac.  This can disable some, if not all, of the template’s features.

If the fonts in your PDF are not the same as the product images in the shop, this means that the PDF had been previously opened in Mac’s Preview, a browser, or a reader that’s not Adobe Reader.

This feature is for templates that use auto-formatting where text formatting is disabled  (please check your template’s item description).

If the fonts are not automatically resizing at all to fit into the space when the product description says it should, this means that the PDF had been previously opened in Mac’s Preview, a browser, or a reader that’s not Adobe Reader.  This can disables some, if not all, of the template’s features.

This feature is available only to templates that allow text formatting (please check your template’s item description):

Simply click on a text entry and then press CTRL-E (for Windows) or Command-E (for Mac) and the text properties tool bar will appear to let you change the font type, font size, alignment, etc.

If it’s not letting you format text when the product description says text formatting is available, this means that the PDF had been previously opened in Mac’s Preview, a browser, or a reader that’s not Adobe Reader.  This can disable some, if not all, of the template’s features.

This is easily solved using the steps below:

It’s likely that you have extra blank lines at the bottom of your text. Try deleting these extra blank lines and your text should fill the box better. See image below.

PHOTOS

Since Adobe Acrobat Reader isn’t capable of photo editing, you’ll need to edit or crop your photos first (if needed) using your favorite photo editing program before placing them on your template. You can also edit your photos using the website PIXLR, a free and easy to use online photo editor.  I wrote a tutorial on how to edit your photos using PIXLR . Click here to read it.

For templates that allow a photo entry in the layout, you should be able to click on the photo area and a window will pop up for you to select a photo from your library. If your template is not doing so, this means that the PDF had been previously opened in Mac’s Preview, a browser, or a reader that’s not Adobe Reader.  This disables some, if not all, of the template’s features.

That’s it! You should now be able to insert your photos. Just make sure to always open your ADOBE PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows or Mac computer.

You can download the free Acrobat Reader at https://get.adobe.com/reader. Subscription to Adobe is not needed.

This is because the original photo is actually upside down or sideways, but our computers will render these photos to us in the correct orientation even if the original image is not.

To fix this,

1.  You’ll need to use your favorite image editor or you can also use PIXLR (a free and easy to use online photo editing tool).

2. Open your image in your image editing software or in PIXLR

3. If it displays sideways or upside down in your image editor, rotate your photo as needed, but if it displays your photo already in the correct orientation, just leave it as it is.

4. Then, SAVE the photo using a new filename.  This will make sure the photo is saved in the correct orientation, so please don’t skip this part.

5. Insert the new image file onto your template.

That’s it! 🙂

Click here for a tutorial on how to rotate your photo into the correct orientation.

No, the photo boxes can accept only image files and the text boxes can accept only text. The product descriptions in my shop will let you know if the template has a photo entry, and the sample product images will show you where the photo entries are placed in the template’s layout.

Click here for more detailed information on using photos in your newsletter.

You may be uploading a photo that is not in the correct orientation or dimension. For example, you may be uploading a landscape or a portrait photo into an entry that is meant for a square photo. Or, you may be uploading what may seem like a square photo, but actually isn’t because all its sides are not equal in length.

When you hover your mouse on the photo entry area, a pop up message will tell you the recommended orientation or dimension of the photo to upload (landscape, portrait, or square).

Please note that Adobe Acrobat Reader can’t adjust or fix uploaded photos. You’ll need to use your favorite image editor to crop your photos first into the required dimension/orientation, whether it is in landscape, portrait or a square, before uploading onto the PDF. If you don’t have one, I highly recommend using the websiste PIXLR, a free and easy to use online photo editor.

Click here for more information and help if you encounter any issues in using photos in your newsletter.

Click here for a tutorial in editing your photos using the PIXLR website.

It’s likely that your image files placed on your template were all together becoming too large for your computer to handle that it’s creating a lag.

To fix this, change the resolution or quality of your photo to a smaller size using your favorite image editing software or you could use the online image editing website PIXLR.

In PIXLR, you can open your file, and then when you save, PIXLR will let you choose the image quality.  Select a lower image quality to reduce the file size.

Once your images are smaller in file size, you can now insert all your photos in your template without much lag.

PRINTING

You can print your completed template at OfficeMax, Staples of FedEx.

If using other print shops, just make sure they use Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows or Mac to open your file.

I recommend taking your file with you to OfficeMax, FedEx, Staples or your preferred printing shop instead of submitting online through their website.

If you have to submit online, make sure to preview it to check that your file looks correct before completing your order. Sometimes, the fonts don’t display correctly on some upload websites.

If submitting online is your only option and the online preview shows fonts that don’t look right, convert your pdf page into a JPG image by using this website … https://smallpdf.com/pdf-to-jpg. The JPG image file will then be the file you’ll upload.  However, this would be my last recommended option, because the JPG version of your template may not be as crisp and sharp as the PDF version.

Always use actual size when printing

If trimming crop marks is needed, your print shop can trim them for an additional charge.

I advise not to.  If you are purchasing the size 8.5 x 11 (letter size), printing it as a 5×7 may make the newsletter’s overall design and  fonts look squished and tiny. The quality and colors may also be different from the original as well.

For the letter-sized newsletters, I recommend using bright white paper of at least 24 lb.  in weight.

For invitations, programs, gift certificates, I recommend using a blank cardstock and not copy paper.

If you’re considering using colored paper, do a test print first and see if you like the results.

I don’t recommend paper with pre-printed designs and borders.

It’s likely that your printer needs to update its driver. Here are my suggested solutions if this happens:

Option 1 – You will need to update your driver or use a different printer. I do understand that this may not be possible for everyone, and if so, see option 2 below.

Option 2 – Convert your completed template to a read-only file. When you do this, your file becomes a regular PDF (no more form entries) and it will no longer be editable. You should then be able to print the document fine.

Click here on how to make your template read only.  If you need help in doing this, let me know and I can do it for you.

STILL NEED HELP?

Are you experiencing ANY of these issues with your Adobe PDF template?

  • Difficult to use
  • Difficult to enter text
  • Can’t save the file
  • Can’t make any text edits
  • Can’t insert a photo in ALL photo boxes
  • Fonts types and font sizes are not the same as in the product images
  • Text typed in certain boxes disappears
  • Text not automatically resizing smaller to fit the text box when product description says it should
  • There are no text boxes, not editable

If yes, this means that the PDF had been previously opened in Mac’s Preview, a browser, or a reader that’s not Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows or Mac.

This should solve the issue.  If you have already entered information in the old template, simply copy and paste that text into the newly downloaded template.
